As noted, Paul Heyman recently signed a new deal with WWE in time for Brock Lesnar’s return to WWE TV and his upcoming match at WWE SummerSlam.

While the general feeling in WWE was that Heyman would be back despite his contract having expired, PWInsider.com is reporting there were some higher ups in WWE who thought Heyman might not be back.

Heyman was reportedly pushing WWE officials for a raise in pay that WWE was unable to accommodate, and while the two sides were renegotiating Heyman’s deal he essentially talked himself into a contract which would see him making a lot more money. When WWE played hardball with Heyman and said they were not going to agree to the terms, Heyman’s previous contract expired, but the two sides kept talking.

Heyman’s projects outside of WWE did not help his case much as there has been some unhappiness from WWE on that front, but ultimately Heyman’s contract status changed when Brock Lesnar’s WWE TV return was announced. Lesnar reportedly “went to bat” for Heyman and told WWE officials he wanted Heyman with him on TV and to make the deal happen.
