Conor McGregor’s name has come up in WWE circles for years, with the hopes of landing him for a huge match. That never materialized, but the former Enzo Amore says Vince McMahon directed him to make it happen.
Enzo Amore, better known as Real 1 today, was a recent guest on the Julian Dorey podcast. The former WWE star says he and Big Cass (now Big Bill in AEW) were set to break up on WWE TV. They were each told about their respective plans as singles talent, which included Enzo getting a title run. He says Vince McMahon also told him to call out McGregor and attend his highly-publicized fight with Floyd Mayweather in the hopes of getting a match with him.
“Bro, I went to the Conor McGregor [vs.] Floyd Mayweather fight because Vince McMahon sent me there. Vince McMahon — bro, when I tell you I was the Cruiserweight Champ of the fuckin’ world. Vince McMahon made me tweet, pulled me into a room,” Enzo explained. “Big Cass is my witness, thank God he was a witness because people probably even wouldn’t fuckin’ believe me.”
Vince McMahon directed Enzo to pick a fight with McGregor
“[Vince says] ‘I want you tweeting at Conor McGregor picking a fight. We want McGregor for fuckin] WrestleMania,” he continued. “Me versus McGregor! Because I’m becoming a bad guy heel, but I’m becoming the bad guy heel that runs his mouth and runs away. The Flair thing. ‘I got more money than you, I’m the champ!’ And when you give the heel a title, you give him a license to kill on the microphone.”
Enzo highlighted how he could “get his ass beat” for 20 minutes, but still steal a win with kick to the nuts and putting his feet on the ropes. He didn’t say how far discussions about the match went. However, it clearly wasn’t successful, as McGregor has never competed in any WWE matches, despite years of rumors about it.
Enzo and Cass split up in the summer of 2017. This would indicate the match would’ve been planned for WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. However, Amore was released by WWE on January 23, 2018, making any hopes of the match happen go away.
Since his release, Enzo has continued to work on the independent scene. He also made sporadic appearances for other prominent wrestling promotions over the years. This includes Ring Of Honor, New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Major League Wrestling. This summer, he also appeared at TNA Slammiversary in “his backyard” of Long Island.
