AEW Dynamite Results:
AEW Continental Classic Kicks Off
Continental Classic Gold League: Kazuchika Okada vs. Kyle Fletcher
- The first Continental Classic match is between two incredible stars, both of whom gave it their all. In the end, Fletcher walked out with the win. Toward the end of the match, Okada slipped out of a brainbuster and gouged Fletcher’s eyes, but Kyle countered a Rainmaker attempt into a roll up to steal a win from the reigning champ.
Winner – Kyle Fletcher
Grade: B+
Great match to start the show, and really great match to start the tournament as a whole. Excited to see where this goes, and will be interesting to see Okada now have to come from behind a loss to try and reclaim his belt.
AEW Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament Continues
The Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale) vs. Sisters of Sin (Skye Blue and Julia Hart)
- The end of the match saw The Babes of Wrath pick up a big win here. Willow saved the day, breaking up a late tag before being sent out of the ring by Blue. After getting back in and making a tag, this allowed Cameron to hit a big backstabber on Blue, and then Willow followed it up with a powerbomb for the win.
Winner – The Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameon and Willow Nightingale)
Grade: C+
This was…okay. A solid enough match, but good to see Nightingale and Cameron continue to pick up big wins.
It’s time to celebrate a championship. In the ring, Tony Schiavone introduces the new AEW World Champion, Samoa Joe. He and The Opps come down to the ring and Joe promptly grabs the mic from Schiavone. Before anything can even be said, we’re shown Swerve Strickland arriving backstage, and coming into the building alongside Hangman Page.
Joe said that this is The Opps house, and tells the crowd to shut up with its chanting. Joe then began explaining how The Opps managed to plan everything. A video played that showed that Hook had always been a member of The Opps, and had only paired with Eddie Kingston to gain Hangman Page’s trust. Out came Hook now, to a loud chorus of booes. Hook said Joe was right, and that the “rednecks” in the crowd were too stupid to realize they were witnessing greatness.
Swerve’s music hits, and out he and Page come. Strickland and Page quickly got to work taking down some of the random men that Joe had The Opps bring down to the ring as protection. Chaos ensued as they completely cleared the area, with The Opps watching from the top of the ramp as refs come down to get Page and Swerve to stop.
AEW Continental Classic Action Continues
AEW Continental Classic Blue League: Jon Moxley vs. Mascara Dorada
- Moxley and Dorada start things off in chaotic fashion, with Dorada quickly going for the injured ankle of Moxley. Moxley is able to get back to his feet, though, and the two put on a back-and-forth bout. In the end, Moxley walks out with a win after getting his knees up as Dorada went for a match-ending shooting star press. With Dorada dazed, Moxley locked in a Darce Choke and Dorada passed out.
Winner – Jon Moxley
After the match, Marina Shafir comes down to the ring, as does Toni Storm. Storm says she still likes Moxley, but what he does with hate is what she does with love, and is more violent than anything hateful Moxley can imagine. Storm then said that Shafir was nothing more than Moxley’s caveman daughter. As for their match, Storm revealed that after some thinking, she had decided it would be a Hardcore Holiday Death Match, with no tags or disqualifications.
Grade: B+
A nice match from Mox and Dorada and an awesome stipulation reveal from Storm. That match next week is going to be an awesome one to watch.
Backstage, Kris Statlander is talking about all of her accomplishments, and said she was the only woman to hold both the TBS and AEW Women’s World Championships, and the only woman to have defeated both Mercedes Moné and Toni Storm. Now, she said, she knows where she’s going next.
AEW Continental Classic Gold League Action
AEW Continental Classic Gold League: Kevin Knight vs. Darby Allin
- Knight picks up the win here. Toward the end of the match, he sent Darby outside of the ring, and as Darby got back in to avoid a ten count, Knight hit a massive dropkick and a UFO splash for the win.
Winner – Kevin Knight
Grade: B
A bit of a shocker of a win here for Knight, but well deserved! Wonder how further he’ll get to go in this tournament.
Final AEW Continental Classic Match of The Night
AEW Continental Classic Blue Match: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Orange Cassidy
- Claudio Castagnoli starts off his Continental Classic run with a big win. Toward the end of the match, Cassidy landed a big Orange Punch on Castagnoli. Afterward, Cassidy hit another Orange Punch and a Beach Break, but Claudio kicked out of it. He then hit a big lariat on Cassidy, and just barely missed a powerbomb before finally winning with a pop up uppercut for the win.
Winner – Claudio Castagnoli
After the win, Claudio and the rest of the Death Riders celebrate. Renee Paquette tried to talk to Claudio, but a fight broke out instead. The entirety of the Gold League Continental Classic competitors got to the ring and brawled to try and gain an advantage, with Kazuchika Okada choosing to instead just watch as the show ended.
Grade: B+
Honestly, the match itself was a great ending, but the brawl at the end was an extra funny touch. I guess we’ll get a Blue League brawl at some point, maybe on Collision?
AEW Dynamite Review:
All things considered, this was a pretty solid show. I thought we’d get more from the fallout of AEW Full Gear, but instead it was a lot of heading right into the Continental Classic. I guess we’ll see more of the fallout from Full Gear in the coming weeks, at least, and with AEW World’s End right around the corner, we should be in for even more chaos.
Grade: B+
