Bully Ray addresses criticism toward the ending of John Cena’s WWE retirement match.
The Cenation Leader faced Gunther in his send-off at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The match ended with Cena tapping out to The Ring General’s chokehold submission, bringing a historic career to a close.
However, the finish sparked a polarizing reaction among the fanbase. With many expressing frustration over how John Cena went out in his final match. Fans in attendance even made their feelings known to Triple H, hitting him with a chorus of boos.
As for Gunther, the former World Heavyweight Champion reportedly needed security to leave the arena following what could be described as a controversial victory over the Never-Seen Seventeen.
Bully Ray on John Cena’s submission loss
On social media, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray shared his perspective on the ending of John Cena’s final match.
The former tag team specialist posted photos of Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and Gunther wearing shirts that mocked their legendary opponents. In Valentine’s case, it referenced the infamous leg-breaking angle involving Wahoo McDaniel that earned him lasting notoriety.
“Some of you will still complain…
“But I hope this helps YOU to better understand how Cena tapping was best for long term business.”
AEW Director of Business Development Jeff Jarrett also expressed his disappointment over Cena losing his final match with a snarky post.
“Love watching movies when the superhero gets destroyed in the final scene and then dies. Even better is when my favorite sports team not only gets beat but gives up with a smile on their face. Makes me feel good about spending time/money on the night. Creative is subjective.”
