Stephen A. Smith Linked to WWE On-Air Role as ‘Serious Talk’ Intensifies

The rumors about Stephen A. Smith’s potential WWE on-air future continue.

Last month, WrestleVotes Radio (via Fightful Select) reported that ESPN sources are “pleased and enthusiastic” about the idea of Stephen A. Smith getting involved in WWE’s partnership. This leads to the possibility of Smith, one of the faces of ESPN, landing an on-air role with WWE. The report noted that there is an expected payoff for his involvement, which is reportedly being pitched for this summer.

According to a new report from F4WOnline.com (via Wrestling Observer Radio), the idea isn’t just being casually thrown out there. During an exchange about Kevin Nash’s comments where he encouraged TKO to stay out of WWE creative business, F4WOnline.com’s Dave Meltzer said that there are people in WWE who are open to Smith crossing over into pro wrestling.

“They really don’t do a lot, but as I was told, they don’t do it much but they seem to always do it at the most inopportune times,” Meltzer said. “It happened this year at WrestleMania, it sure did, yeah. We haven’t seen anyone forced on them. I mean, we haven’t seen anything with Stephen A. Smith — yet, although, boy, that name has been talked about. And I know it’s serious talk. Put it this way, a lot of the people who were not happy about Pat McAfee in fact are favorable to Stephen A., as far as internally it goes.

“But we’ll have to wait and see,” Meltzer added. “I mean, it’s like, we haven’t had — other than Lil Yachty, he’s around a lot — but other than that, we haven’t had any celebrities since right after WrestleMania, I guess.”

Stephen A. Smith said Nick Khan encouraged him to work with WWE

Stephen A. Smith recently revealed that WWE President Nick Khan encouraged him to get involved with the partnership.

Smith made the admission during a recent episode of First Take. During the discussion, which also highlighted McAfee’s role at the event, Smith shared that Khan had pitched him a similar role.

“I love it. I love it, and I want to applaud Pat McAfee for that, because let me tell you something. They were talking to — I go back to the old days of Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan and people like that,” Stephen A. Smith explained.

“I actually wanted to do that. Your man Nick Khan talked to me about that. See, the difference is, I’m not as courageous as Pat McAfee. I ain’t trying to get hit by one of them big boys, at all! I want no part of it, but I love that stuff because I think the sport needs it.”
