CM Punk Drops Cryptic Wrestling Reference Amid Recent WWE Issues Report

CM Punk has been away from WWE for weeks, which led to intense speculation. Some reports even suggested that he might have some issues with the company, which might explain the delay in his return.

Reports claimed that his absence was linked to creative disagreements. WWE reportedly wanted Punk to move to SmackDown and start a feud with Cody Rhodes to help balance the star power between the two brands. However, Punk reportedly had different ideas about his return, leading to a disagreement over creative plans.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there are some “issues” between Punk and WWE, but “it’s not as bad as some have made it out to be.”

Now, the former World Heavyweight Champion has added more fuel to the discussion with a cryptic comment that longtime wrestling fans recognized as a reference to WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk.

CM Punk references Terry Funk’s famous line amid WWE absence

While away from WWE, Punk recently returned to the commentary desk for Cage Fury Fighting Championships. He worked CFFC 156 in his hometown of Chicago. This marked his first time calling fights for the promotion since October 2024.

During the event, commentator John Morgan joked that CFFC had brought the show to Chicago so Punk didn’t have to travel. Punk replied, “I don’t travel anymore. My horse is sick.”

The phrase is closely linked to Terry Funk. The wrestling legend famously used “my horse is sick” as a humorous excuse during different points in his career, including when he left the WWF in the 1980s because of the demanding schedule. He also reportedly used the line again in 1993 when he missed a planned appearance at Survivor Series.

Punk has often spoken about his admiration for Terry Funk. On the surface, it looked like a fun nod to the legend. But because of recent reports about Punk’s future, some fans wondered if the line hinted at his current relationship with the company.
