Johnny Gargano Comments On Wrestling Hiatus And Impending Fatherhood, Taking ‘Never Say Never’ Approach To His Return

While Johnny Gargano is currently focused on things outside of professional wrestling, he won’t rule out a return to the ring sooner rather than later.

Johnny Gargano was the most recent guest on the Iron-On Wrestling with Gregory Iron to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about letting his WWE contract expire and the decision to take time away from wrestling for the birth of his child, Gargano revealed that he wants to be there for all of the moments that come along with that, and if he was wrestling full-time that would be very difficult to do.

“I feel like where we’re at; this is our one. There could be more; who knows? I got my boy. So I’m pretty happy about that. But for all intents and purposes, we’re only doing this once,” Johnny Gargano said. “So I kind of want to just experience everything about this experience that I can take in this time, and I don’t want to have any regrets looking back. I wish I was there for this, or I wish I was there for that. I’m going to try to be there for everything. I mean, I don’t know if this is a normal thing. But I’ve gone to every single appointment Candice has had like, even though I don’t really need to be there, but I’ve gone with her because I feel like, again, this is a team, and we’re doing this together. I want to just be there for her and do whatever I can to make her life easier. And hold up my end of the bargain because I only really did one thing in this whole process. I did the thing to make the thing. The people out there, they know. If you don’t know, then look it up. Google it. That was my end of the bargain. Now Candice has the hard part. So I kind of wanted to do everything I could to make things as easy as possible for her and also enjoy the process as well. I had the easy part of the job.”

Gargano also said that he planned on taking his break last year, and it worked out to where it lined up with having a baby with wife Candice LeRae. Gargano said that he could have stayed with NXT and been comfortable, noting that the door is still open to return, but he wants to accomplish some other things while he navigates the world as a new parent. When asked to confirm the idea that he doesn’t have any plans to wrestle anytime soon, Gargano took the “never say never” approach on that subject:

“I’m always a never say never guy cause you just don’t f’n know. Like, I just don’t know, really. But, I mean, I don’t plan on it,” Johnny Gargano said. “I planned on having this break. And then I planned on having time with the baby on the other side of that. I mean, most definitely. I’m only 34 years old, and I’m still very much in my prime. I’m hoping that this break gives me more clarity on things. But, I just want to have time to be away because I haven’t — I’ve been doing this for 16 years. And I’ve never really been out of the bubble as you. When you’re in the bubble, you’re in it, and you’re going, and you’re going, and you’re going, and you’re going, you don’t think twice about it and only until you’re actually out and you’re able to like kind of like decompress, or you’re like wow, like maybe this is what I want, or maybe this is what I want. So I’m really hoping I have an epiphany like that. But like I said, never say never like again; different people are contacting me all the time. So you just never know what opportunity is going to be the right one.”
