Roman Reigns Reflects On His Biggest Promo Flubs, How Fans Still Bring Up ‘Sufferin’ Succotash’

Roman Reigns recalls some of his worst moments on the mic.

WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns recently sat down with Logan Paul of Impaulsive. During their hour-long conversation, Reigns opened up about forgetting his lines during a 2017 promo with John Cena ahead of their first major singles match at No Mercy.

“I did, yeah,” Reigns confirmed before discussing whether or not Cena’s comments made him a better performer. “I think just being in that position and going through that experience made me better. I don’t think it was anything like John [said] specifically. Because I take from everybody I’ve worked with, everyone I’ve competed with. I always try to take something that I’ve learned from them. It’s like looking at, you know, like if you’re an offensive coordinator. I’m working under you as a quarterback coach or something, and it’s like, ‘Man, that offense is good.’ I’m gonna take everything I like from it, then I’m gonna add a little bit to my own playbook. Now I got my own formula here.”

The conversation shifted to other flubs that Roman has had on the mic. He recalled, “I’ve had just crappy promos that—you know, you get in early, you don’t have any equity. I [don’t] want to say something right now, I ain’t saying it. But ten years ago, if Vince is saying this and it’s highlighted, then you’re going to say it. And I said some crazy stuff which still followed—like the ‘sufferin’ succotash.’ I don’t even remember. I just remember ‘sufferin’ succotash’ and it was literally like eight years ago and it will still be brought—I mean, I delivered some really good work over the last few years, and they’ll still be like, ‘sufferin’ succotash.’

Roman Reigns also reflected on a promo where he messed up declaring himself for the 2015 Royal Rumble match, which he would go on to win.

“I came back from—I think it was my hernia injury early on and I came back and the Rumble was coming up pretty soon. I did a run-in and beat up some people and then I did a promo backstage where I was supposed to be declaring for the Royal Rumble. When I hit that ‘declare,’ I forget how I flubbed it, but when I did, I just flubbed the clip and I just looked right in the camera. We were in Cleveland and it was bad. Because it was a pretty dope segment of me coming in and beating everybody up. I think I speared Big Show. It was really cool, and then I’m supposed to have this, ‘I’m declaring for the Royal Rumble and I’m going to win it and go to WrestleMania,’ you know, the whole nine.”
