Karrion Kross On If He Thought WWE Return Would Happen, Bringing Back His Old Gimmick

WWE Superstar Karrion Kross was not sure if he would return to WWE when he was released in 2021 but Triple H called him to come home. Speaking in an interview with mySanAntonio, Kross spoke on numerous topics. Check out the highlights below.

On if he thought he would return to WWE after being released in 2021:

Sometimes I did. And sometimes I didn’t. But I landed into such good hands right off the bat. Occupationally I had a chance to go in so many different directions, and explore few new fields. I was going to get to see what I was really good at. I was going to get to find and discover new layers of myself. And I did and quite honestly, it’s funny how things work. It served a greater purpose for me to actually become a mentally healthier person. I felt less dependent on putting all my eggs in one basket. And I mean this completely non pretentiously. I just mean as a man, as an adult, I had to live through something where I had to make a very, very big change and adapt very quickly, and I did and it kind of put my confidence through the roof as a capable human being.

On being brought back to the company (WWE) by Triple H:

He called us up and he said, ‘Do you want to come home?” And I responded, “Well, like, yeah.’ And then he was like, ‘All right. Here is my next question. Can you be here in a day and a half?’ And we’re like, ‘That’s pretty fast.’ You know, we had all these different bookings and different things going on. We had our lives planned out. I mean, and people don’t even know this, we’re thinking about maybe even having a kid, you know, or thinking about starting a family. And we looked at each other – and her and I have always been telepathic, even before we were married or dating — so, we just kind of gave each other a look and we knew what page we’re on. And we’re like, ‘Yeah, we can do that.’ So, we flew there in disguises. And no one knew who we were, no one could see, one day, I’ll put that picture out. We’re literally wearing disguises in the airport. And one fan noticed. But we landed and we got on a bus. And we hid the entire day on the bus until the segment where we came out and beat up Drew McIntyre.

On Scarlett playing an integral role in the way Karrion Kross is portrayed:

I didn’t want her to be a replaceable component, like some managers can be. That’s not to be derogatory, but sometimes things accidentally can fall off or fall short of expectations. So, I had written the characters so that they do operate together. I’ve always seen Kross as animalistic, without a particular direction. And Scarlett provides that direction of where he’s supposed to put his energy. Perhaps without her, he would attack anyone and everyone, because he is addicted to chaos, and disrupting things, and perhaps can’t find his own way without this esoteric, mystical direction, pulling a card to say this is who you go for and here’s the time to do it. And when this time runs out, we get them. It is almost like snakes when they bite and poison their prey with their venom. They let it kind of die out for a little bit and then they go get them when they’re at their weakest point.

On returning to his old gimmick instead of the one initially used on the main roster:

I was relieved on behalf of the fans relief because I did despite what I had to do, despite how I would prefer to perform and how I would like to perform. I know my audience. And I also know what everyone else is doing in the show. And I think it’s important as a performer at this level to create a common ground between what people are currently doing, and what should be unavailable for you and what you can do. There here is what fans want to see you do you and you have to find something right in the middle, and I feel like we’re there. They’re getting something nostalgic from NXT, but they’re also getting a bit of an updated different sort of version of Karrion Kross. This seems to be and it feels like a little bit more of a of a dirty or merciless version; one that’s not afraid to embrace cheating to win or one that’s not afraid to take any sort of avenue in order to get the victory, despite how shameful it is. This is a very clear-cut villain. And for me, it’s very fun.
