Trish Stratus Doesn’t Want To Be In A Token Women’s Match, Highlights Importance Of Storylines

Trish Stratus believes there’s always room for improvement when it comes to the presentation of women’s wrestling.

Stratus, a 7-time WWE Women’s Champion, emerged onto the scene during the height of the Attitude Era where Bra & Panties matches were the norm for women in WWE. Women’s wrestling has heavily evolved since that time, but Stratus thinks promoters can do even more to keep it moving forward.

During a recent appearance on Out of Character with Ryan Satin, the WWE Hall of Famer was asked if there’s anything the wrestling industry could do to elevate women’s wrestling even higher.

“I think there’s always room for improvement in any industry, right?” Stratus said. “I think it’s great. I’m very happy to see where the women fit into the grand scheme of things. I think we are represented well. To be able to come into this landscape and see how I can adapt to it has been fun. It’s going to be ever-changing. The thing about wrestling is it’s going to it’s always changing. It’s an ever-changing business and industry. So, we can have this interview again in another five years and we’ll notice these things have been different or shifted.”

Leading up to WrestleMania 39, many were hoping to see the women main event one of the nights. Some reports indicated that Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley were the frontrunning option to main event night one of WrestleMania. Charlotte Flair even publicly expressed her desire to headline night one with Rhea Ripley. As the event unfolded, though, that spot was given to the WWE Tag Team Championship title match instead.

Trish Stratus has now given her take on the situation. “So, we have this thing where like, there has to be a woman’s match. But I always looked at it like, I don’t want you to look at it as a women’s match. I want you to look at it as, ‘This storyline should culminate, to this WrestleMania moment.’ I feel like a lot of it is — it’s all about our story and our characters and taking our fans on a journey to get them to a certain point. And so, I don’t think it depends on the, ‘Let’s make sure we get the token women’s match.’ I don’t want to be the token women match.”

“I want my match regardless of gender, to be the match. Because of the storyline, because of the characters, because of the interest and because [it’s] what the fans want. So it is an interesting take on it, right? It’s not guaranteed. But it’s also like it’s not guaranteed that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn would be in the main event. But because of their storyline and their hard work and their commitment to their story and characters, that’s what brought them to the dance.”
