Sonny Kiss Felt Like A Natural In Wrestling Training, Had To Work On Psychology

Sonny Kiss reflects on her start in the wrestling business.

During a recent interview with The LGBT Sport Podcast, AEW and Ring of Honor star Sonny Kiss discussed the events that led her to step into the squared circle.

“It started out, I was in high school,” Kiss recalled. “I think it was like junior or senior year, and I was doing backflips in the park and wrestling around with my friends. Some friends of theirs suggested I start wrestling training and actually start training professionally. At this time, I’m doing several different auditions and was auditioning for the NFL cheerleaders as well and just seeing where life is taking me, your typical senior thought process.

“I was doing NJPAC [New Jersey Performing Arts Center] and lots of auditions and they were like, ‘Yeah, why don’t you try out wrestling? You’re really athletic, you’re super talented. You even have a personality. I think you can do really, really well with it.’ I said, ‘Okay, cool.’ So I went to East Coast Pro in Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey, and I started with Gino Caruso. He said I had something because I was like a natural.

“The only thing I would say, the psychology of wrestling, it took me a little bit to develop that, but everything was like my calling, I felt like. There’s no one else like Sonny Kiss in pro wrestling and I was so glad I got to be that person. Yeah, started like a whole revolution, evolution of being a gender non-conforming person in professional wrestling.”
