Minnesota Coach: Gable Steveson Will Focus Solely On WWE Career

Gable Steveson will solely focus on his WWE career moving forward, according to his coach.

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson had a brief run in the spotlight earlier this summer, as he feuded with Baron Corbin on NXT. Steveson made his in-ring debut at NXT Great American Bash. He has also competed at NXT live events, and he had a dark match at the WWE SmackDown taping on January 5.

In a new update, University of Minnesota head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum commented on Gable Steveson’s status in a video on social media. (H/t Andrew Thompson of POST Wrestling for the transcription)

“Also, a quick update on Gable Steveson, unfortunately, he will not be able to compete for us this season,” he said. “He is a great competitor, he’s always wanted to compete for the University of Minnesota but ultimately, the WWE would prefer that he solely focus on his professional wrestling career at this time. So, whenever he’s not at the WWE Performance Center down in Florida he’s up here working with our heavyweights, which is awesome.

“We just can’t thank him enough for the impact that he’s had on our program. We loved following him and watching him compete on the mat he’s amazing and now, we’re excited to watch him in his WWE career, so thank you Gable Steveson from our program and from all the Gopher fans across the world and we look forward to watching you in your career moving forward.

Shawn Michaels previously stated that they intended to use Gable Steveson in NXT again. Check out his comments here.

Gable Steveson previously withdrew from the 2023 World Championships. More information is available here.
