CM Punk sees many of his peers hanging it up, but that doesn’t exactly mean he’s itching to follow them any time soon.
Punk was featured in a new behind-the-scenes vlog during WWE’s recent tours of Australia and Japan. Punk spoke about the WWE roster celebrating AJ Styles in Japan, pointing out how Styles’ path to WWE mirrored his own in some ways.
“If this was his last match in Tokyo, we did it right. We had to celebrate AJ Styles,” Punk said. “What he means to me is he is a guy who started around the same time as I did, in a different part of the country. [He] paid his dues, did things his way. He’s very influential and he’s a guy who you’d never think would be in WWE, let alone make it in WWE. We kinda have that in common. He exceeded his expectations just like I did.”
CM Punk also pointed out how AJ Styles’ pending in-ring retirement also made him reflect on how much longer he has left in the ring.
“So, standing here now towards the end of my career, and John Cena is hanging it up, AJ Styles says he’s going to retire next year, I don’t know how long I’ve got,” CM Punk said. “I’m going to ride until the wheels fall off, and I assume that’s sooner than later. So it’s important for all of us, not just myself, to celebrate all the wrestlers as they retire.”
CM Punk and Jey Uso to fight for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1. Punk solidified himself as the number one contender prior to Seth Rollins going down to a shoulder injury, but former TNA President Scott D’Amore recently explained why Punk winning the title would be a mistake right now.
