The Rock was in the know, and may have played an accidental spoiler role in announcing one of the most infamous events in recent history.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was recently profiled by The Hollywood Reporter. During the interview, he was asked about a Tweet he posted on May 1, 2011. This was the date that Osama bin Laden had been killed.
“Just got word that will shock the world,” he wrote on Twitter. “Land of the free…home of the brave DAMN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!”
John Cena also announced the news to fans attending WWE Extreme Rules 2011 in Tampa. Cena’s announcement came nearly 30 minutes after The Rock’s post.
However, Johnson’s Tweet was posted before anyone else had reported the news that bin Laden had been killed. He shared with THR‘s Scott Feinberg that a friend had tipped him off before President Barack Obama was set to announce it publicly. However, he later found out he tweeted the news too early when he got a call learning that Obama hadn’t announced it yet.
“I’ve got a friend of a friend who gave me a call. The call was like, “Hey, this thing happened.” And I said, “Okay, wonderful news.” I was told on the call that the president at that time [Barack Obama] was going to make his speech in 20 minutes or whatever. I said, “Okay, great.” So 20 minutes go by, and at about the 25th minute, I tweet this. Then I get a second call, and the call is, “Yeah, the president didn’t go on yet.” And I went, “Oh shit.”
