Matt Cardona cooked up a great lie to keep his WWE return as Zack Ryder a secret.
Speaking to TNA Wrestling’s Brian Myers (Curt Hawkins) and AEW’s Mark Sterling on the Major Wrestling Figure Podcast, Matt Cardona opened up about how he prepared for his WWE return on short notice.
“It’s been over five years. I had to, within 24 hours’ notice, get Zack Ryder gear made, because all the gear that I had was not something I’d want to wear. But I did use my old boots, and they were ripped. The straps were ripped. I had to get Shotzi’s husband, Jesús, to fix them.”
Matt Cardona stated that he didn’t reveal anything to Shotzi’s husband about his WWE return and just asked him if he could fix the boots. He also revealed how he cooked up a lie on the spot after he had to abruptly leave the podcast for a moment to take a call from WWE.
They played the footage from the previous week’s members-only podcast episode, where Matt Cardona was seen leaving to take a phone call. However, he didn’t reveal anything and told Brian Myers and Mark Sterling that he was setting up a meeting with ADT Security to deal with a problem with his home alarm system.
“Let’s just say there was a phone call that happened, and it was not ADT Security. And the reason it wasn’t necessarily a lie, and why I was able to lie on the spot, is because I was having ADT problems, and I was waiting for a call from them. But that’s not the call I got.”
Matt Cardona Also Revealed That The Merchandise Deal He Signed With WWE Is Temporary
Following his return on last week’s SmackDown, Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select) reported that Matt Cardona didn’t sign a full-time contract with WWE, but had signed a deal to allow the company to produce Zack Ryder merchandise.
However, Matt Cardona revealed in the podcast that the deal with WWE is only temporary.
“I did sign something to let them do merch temporarily. So, could there be a Mattel figure? Could there be a Topps card? It’s really up to them. I’ve given them the rights temporarily.”
