It seems Nick Khan is attempting to create some revisionist history as it pertains to a certain WWE Hall of Famer.
WWE President Nick Khan was a recent guest on Logan Paul’s IMPAULSIVE. While discussing Paul’s history of singles matches with Rey Mysterio, Khan claims that while in WCW, Mysterio was considered nothing until he signed with WWE, and the machine got behind him.
“There was one match, you and Rey Mysterio. Think about the work that guy has put into his career. When he was in WCW, he was considered a nothing,” Nick Khan said. “A nothing. He came to WWE, and he had a great luchador history prior to WCW, he came to WWE, and the machine got behind him.
“He did everything he needed to do to be elevated by that machine. In that match, you saw him save you or certainly help you, or make sure there wasn’t physical injury, which there could have been. I remember watching how quickly he did it and how instinctively he knew what to do. It made me happy that you were in the ring with one of the all-time great pros.” [H/T: Fightful]
Nick Khan is overlooking Rey Mysterio’s tremendous WCW career
There’s no doubt that Rey Mysterio’s WWE career earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame. However, it’s ridiculous to imply that he was a nothing before joining the company.
Mysterio is a former five-time WCW Cruiserweight Champion. He also held the WCW World Tag Team Titles on three separate occasions. His run with WCW during the Monday Night Wars was considered an important part of the company’s success during that time period.
WCW’s Cruiserweight Division was something that truly helped set the company apart from WWE when Nitro and RAW went head-to-head for several years. Without Mysterio, there’s no telling how successful that division would have been.
