Seth Rollins has shared deeper insight into John Cena’s decision to tap out in his final WWE match.
John Cena officially ended his in-ring career at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he faced Gunther and shocked fans by tapping out something he hadn’t done in decades. Last week, Seth Rollins said he had mixed feelings about the finish. While some fans criticized Cena for tapping out, Rollins felt the moment was intentional and symbolic, like Cena was fading into the sunset.
In an new interview with Jay Mohr on the Mohr Stories, Seth Rollins was asked who the best opponent he had ever wrestled was, he immediately named Cena. The conversation then shifted to whether Cena might ever come out of retirement.
He shut that idea down quickly. “John’s never going to wrestle again.” When Mohr suggested that “money talks,” Rollins strongly disagreed stating, “I will tell you, there’s no there is no amount of money that is the voice of Honda we are talking about. He’s fine. He’s good. When John sets his mind to something, he will not break.”
Rollins also revealed that he believes the controversial finish to Cena’s final match was likely Cena’s own call. “I have a sneaking suspicion that it was his idea. I don’t know that that’s true because I’m not, you know, and I didn’t ask. And if I blew up your spot, John, I’m sorry. I think it was his idea, personally.”
He explained that in wrestling, it’s traditional for a retiring star to put over his opponent. “I mean, it’s customary in our business to, when you’re on your way out, put the guy over. And here’s the thing: if John Cena had won that match, we wouldn’t even be having the conversation today. No one would be talking about it. No, you wouldn’t. It was a nice end to the career. Great end. And that’d be the end of it. We’d all go, ‘Oh, that was great.'”
