Ricochet reportedly wasn’t forced to issue his apology over controversial tweet.
The AEW star has been in hot water over a distasteful tweet in which he mocked a fan’s medical condition. The fan, who has multiple sclerosis (MS), criticized Ricochet’s acting skills, prompting the former National Champion to respond: “I’m glad you got MS.”
Ricochet initially tried to double down on his remark but later admitted he was wrong and issued an apology to the fan and the internet wrestling community. He also promised to “do better” in the future.
However, fans continued to criticize him, accusing him of making an “empty apology.” His wife, Samantha Irvin, revealed that she received death threats over the controversy and had to deactivate her X account.
AEW’s reaction to Ricochet’s controversial Tweet
There was also speculation about Ricochet potentially losing his job with All Elite Wrestling over the controversial tweet. A previous report suggested that AEW did not force him to issue an apology but did advise him that apologizing would be the right thing to do.
A new report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via F4WOnline.com, provided additional context regarding the apology. According to the report, Ricochet was encouraged by a close friend to apologize, “which was not forced on him, nor, according to those with knowledge of the situation, had anyone from the company contacted him about it.”
“Ricochet eventually was called by a longtime friend who advised him to delete the tweet. He said he had great respect for that person, a former wrestler who he worked with when both were independent stars traveling the world, and deleted it,” the report noted.
Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp backed the WON report, stating that it was not a cover story, as some fans had suggested online. Ricochet did not appear on the March 18 episode of AEW Dynamite, nor did he attend the Collision tapings.
