The possible timeframe for the recently announced WWE John Cena Classic Tournament has reportedly been revealed.
WWE legend John Cena appeared at the Backlash PLE to announce the John Cena Classic Tournament and the creation of a new championship connected to it. The new initiative will see developmental talent face off against the main roster superstars. It will also have a unique format, with the winner not automatically becoming champion. The fans will vote to decide the title holder, who may have lost, but given the title due to his hustle.
Early reports noted that the tournament is still a work in progress and that WWE has not decided on a date or venue. Sources had shared that an early December time frame makes the most logistical sense with the company’s calendar and the first anniversary of John Cena’s final match.
Now, according to PWInsider, it was noted during a WWE town hall meeting today that the promotion has targeted to host the John Cena Classic Tournament in the latter part of the year. One person close to the matter shared that it could happen at “the end of the year.”
John Cena says the plan is for the tournament to be a one-night event
During his recent conversation with Zack Heydorn on The Takedown on SI, John Cena stated that the tournament’s unique format will create intrigue among the fans. He also revealed that the current plan is for the Classic to be a one-night event, and described it as WWE’s All-Star game.
“I want the winner of the classic to keep the championship. I never want them to defend it. I want them to take it home. I want them to have that relic of importance because what I’m trying to do is I want to create an event that’s great for the fans and great for the superstars. I want the superstars to say, ‘Hey man, I didn’t get invited this year. I want in next year, and I want to win.’
“So, when you lead with, it’s like a tournament, it’s like this. I know that there’s questions out there. I like that. I like that because there’s intrigue, and yes, there’s going to be perspectives from all angles, and I get all these perspectives. What we’re trying to do is a one-night event. If you look at Saturday Night’s Main Event, if I were to sum up the John Cena Classic in one sentence, WWE’s All-Star game. End stop.”
