Dusty Rhodes is a legend in the world of wrestling. Before he became known widely as “The American Dream,” though, he was a pizza man.
In a recent clip that’s gone viral on X, a vignette played of one of Rhodes’ earliest appearances in the then-WWF. During it, Rhodes pulls up to a home in a bright pink car as “the pizza man.” Rhodes steps out of the car talking about being “the American pizza man,” wearing a cut-up t-shirt with “pizza” crudely written on it.
After talking about the pizzas he’s got, including a “pig’s feet pizza,” Rhodes delivers the pizza to a woman. She offers him a taste of the pizza, to which he grabs two and takes a bite. The vignette ends with Rhodes’ The American Dream logo popping up alongside him.

The vignette would go on to become a staple of Rhodes’. He would do a few more promos as the “common man,” a role which he routinely played throughout his career in the ring.
Rhodes was a major name in pro wrestling before he went to work for WWF, giving him the “Common Man” gimmick highlighted by yellow polka-dotted attire. Rhodes went on to film vignettes where he took on other blue-collar roles before he was eventually recognized by others who said, “Hey! Aren’t you…?”
Many fans felt the gimmick was intended to humiliate Rhodes due to his past in WWF’s rival company Jim Crockett Promotions/NWA/WCW, but it’s clear that Rhodes made the best of the situation and created some entertaining promos.
