Tony Khan Reveals Injuries Forced Changes to Original AEW Forbidden Door Plans

Tony Khan has revealed that changes were made to the Forbidden Door PPV due to injury.

As usual, Forbidden Door showcased a myriad of talents from AEW, NJPW, CMLL, and STARDOM. Still, some were noticeably left off the card.

According to AEW CEO Tony Khan, this was the result of untimely injuries.

“There were plans to use Callum Newman and the United Empire. When Callum Newman got injured, they held him back from the show. So that was a major change, and we made the best of that,” Khan told Case Lowe on Q101. “But whether it was injuries with Callum Newman or Tomohiro Ishii, who I would have loved to have had participate in the main event action in the show, we had several big fights. One of those great fights was the death’s door steel cage match. Originally, I had slotted Ishii to participate in that. Of course, a number of injuries and changes, but throughout the process, I really do enjoy working with New Japan Pro Wrestling. They’re very honest and keep their word.”

United Empire’s Callum Newman made his AEW debut earlier this year in an eight-man tag bout on Dynamite. Former NJPW NEVER Openweight Champion Tomohiro Ishii, on the other hand, has competed under the AEW banner nearly four dozen times, with the latest instance pitting him in a match against Andrade El Idolo on Collision in February. Ishii has been out of action with a neck injury in recent months. His timetable for an in-ring return is unknown.

“I’m excited to work with New Japan more and more, also to partner with STARDOM on this show and CMLL. They added a lot,” Khan said. “Very excited about those partnerships.”
