WWE Fans Chanted ‘Whoop That Trick’ At Becky Lynch For A Major Reason

Trick Williams has taken the WWE main roster by storm. He’s been on SmackDown for a short time, but he’s arguably one of the most popular members on the WWE main roster.

This week’s episode of WWE RAW on Netflix featured the crowd chanting “Whoop That Trick” at Becky Lynch during her segment with AJ Lee. However, they weren’t chanting it specifically because of Trick Williams’ influence.

Don’t get it wrong: the phrase is popular in WWE because of Trick Williams. However, WWE was in Memphis on Monday night, where the phrase has a deep meaning on another level.

Where did ‘Whoop That Trick’ originate?

The phrase ‘Whoop That Trick’ gained popularity in Memphis during the Memphis Grizzlies’ 2013 NBA Playoff run. The FedEx Forum DJ played the song “Whoop That Trick” to pump up the crowd, and it’s still used today.

The song is actually from the 2005 film Hustle & Flow, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. In the movie, Howard played a pimp named DJay, who tried to turn his life around by becoming a rapper. The film features the song, written specifically for the movie by Memphis-based rapper Al Kapone.

During a WrestleMania 40 weekend interview with WrestleZone, Trick Williams credited Hustle & Flow as inspiration for his use of the phrase and called Kapone a close friend.

Hustle & Flow was nominated for several awards at the 2006 Oscars, but “Whoop That Trick” didn’t win a trophy. However, another song from the film’s soundtrack, “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp,” won Best Music (Original Song).
