Triple H reflects on the humble beginnings of WWE Elimination Chamber.
Elimination Chamber is one of the most iconic match concepts ever brought to life by WWE. Superstars who have had the privilege or misfortune of competing inside the Chamber know just how violent it becomes once the steel door shuts.
The first Elimination Chamber match took place at WWE Survivor Series 2002. The bout saw Triple H defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Kane, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, and eventual winner Shawn Michaels.
The Game suffered an early injury in the match when a mistimed Five-Star Frog Splash from Rob Van Dam crushed his throat. Despite the gruesome injury, Triple H lasted until the final moments before dropping the title to Shawn Michaels.
Triple H remembers WWE Elimination Chamber origins
Hyping up tonight’s Elimination Chamber event, the Chief Content Officer recalled how the concept came to life. Levesque noted that the idea for the unforgiving steel structure was first sketched on the back of a napkin before the brutal spectacle became a reality.
“The concept of the ‘Elimination Chamber’ started like all things in @WWE do… an idea that tried to answer the question “what if?” A back-of-the-napkin drawing that became a structure and now acts as a massive opportunity to main event #WrestleMania.
“We all saw the #WWEChamber for the first time when we arrived @thegarden in 2002. I remember that day for many reasons – the pain of the cage and the chainlink fence, a partially collapsed trachea halfway through the match, and of course @ShawnMichaels historic championship win (and his “fashionable” gear and “stylish” haircut).
“The Elimination Chamber tests the limits of a Superstar. For every bump, every bruise, I’m reminded of the brutal match that began it all and the talent who competed in it. Good luck to the men and women competing in tonight’s chamber matches.
