Ronda Rousey says UFC used to be the top place for mixed martial arts fighters, but that’s no longer the case.
Rousey took the stage at a Netflix press conference to promote her upcoming fight against Gina Carano. During her speech, Rousey took aim at UFC, insinuating that the promotion is now more focused on making money than putting on the best fights.
“It’s just not about putting on the best fights possible anymore,” Rousey said. “Dana isn’t the owner, and he isn’t calling the shots, he isn’t running things the way that he wants because he’s an employee of the company.”
Rousey said it was a big mistake on TKO/Endeavor’s part not to let White run things the way he always did. After saying that the UFC White House card sucks, Rousey called out the promotion for not paying its fighters a fair living wage.
Ronda Rousey blasts UFC for making its fighters live at “poverty level”
“It used to be that UFC was the best place that you could come in combat sports to make a living and be paid fairly. And not it’s no longer—it’s one of the worst place to go. It’s why so many of their top athletes are leaving to go and find pay elsewhere, it’s why champions like Valentina are selling pictures of their t*tties on OnlyFans. These people, a lot of them at the ground level, a lot of them can’t even support their families. They are living poverty level, fighting full-time,” she continued. “They just got $7.7 billion dollars. There’s no reason they can’t afford to pay their athletes at least a living wage.”
Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano will take place on May 16 at the Intuit Dome. The event will air live on Netflix.
