This WWE NXT star had no idea John Cena was picking her for a major match.
At NXT Deadline, EVOLVE Women’s Champion Kendal Grey bested four other competitors to win the Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge. Grey capped off the match with three points to earn a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship.
Speaking to Busted Open After Dark‘s Bully Ray in a new interview, Kendal Grey revealed she was shocked to learn that John Cena picked her for the Iron Survivor Challenge at WWE NXT Deadline.
“Oh, I had no idea (John Cena was picking me for the Iron Survivor Challenge at NXT Deadline),” she said. “No idea. I literally was shocked. Shocked. I was like, ‘There’s no way. This is not happening,’ because I am still very new in this.
“I just passed two years being in the Performance Center. I am so new and so fresh so to have this opportunity and to have John Cena see something in me to test my skills against the best women in NXT, it meant something to me…” [H/T Fightful]
WWE NXT stars to compete on John Cena’s retirement card
Several NXT stars are set to compete at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The card will be headlined by John Cena versus Gunther. The Ring General defeated LA Knight in The Last Time Is Now Tournament finals for the opportunity to retire Cena.
Elsewhere on the card, three NXT stars will be in action against main roster veterans. NXT Champion Oba Femi will square off against Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in a non-title match.
Speaking of titles, the World Tag Team Championship will be on the line as AJ Styles and Dragon Lee defend their titles against NXT’s Je’Von Evans and TNA X Division Champion Leon Slater. Moreover, Bayley will collide with former NXT Women’s North American Champion Sol Ruca.
